"Seeing for Ourselves" at Vulindlela

On Friday, February 23, 2007, Naydene de Lange, Lesley Cohen and Lindiwe Mbhele visited the teachers of Kuhlekonke high school in the Vulindlela region of KwaZulu-Natal to discuss the video Seeing for Ourselves, created by learners during a videomaking workshop at Kuhlekonke in 2006.

As part of the Learning Together project, Seeing for Ourselves documented learners' own perspectives on gender-based violence, rape, and sexual abuse. During the workshop, teachers viewed the completed video for the first time, and had the opportunity to discuss the many issues represented therein with members of the CVM. The workshop was a vital starting point for encouraging further engagement with these difficult issues, and provided a useful critical lens with which to examine gender-based violence in schools and communities. The workshop materials will soon be available on the CVM website.
