Since 2005, Lungile Zungu, a third-year Education student at UKZN, has been running the ‘School of English’ program for grade 7 learners at McCarthy Primary School in an informal settlement just outside of Pietermaritzburg. Lungile spends every Saturday morning of the school year voluntarily running an English-language course for children who wish to participate. Drawing on some of the resources of CVM, Lungile went around with the children to their tin-made school and community, documenting the things that need changing. They wrote about their photos, produced posters and presented them at an open house on 31 July 2006.
School of English activities are continuing into their second year, and Lungile continues to do her own fundraising. A video documentary was created in November 2006 at the CVM, highlighting the learners' experiences of their photo projects, their schooling environment, and issues in their communities.
